"Overall profilerative indices in the small intestinal mucosa are high: in the mouse IS values of between 38 and 55 per cent are reported, with mitotic indices of around 4 per cent (table 18.3) values in the rat are comparable. There is little evidence for variation in proliferative indices with bowel position, although the number of labelled cells per crypt does fall from 'duodenum to ileum' (Hagemann et al. 1970b) since there is a proximodistal fall in the crypt population, the labelling index could well remain constant."
