"While [researchers] have not been very successful in elucidating the role of cell proliferation in carcinogenesis, there have been several salient studies on the changes in cell kinetic parameters which occur in squamous epithelium during the process of carcinogenesis. A favourite model for such studies has been the hamster cheek pouch treated topically with the complete carcinogen 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benz-anthracene (DMBA) for several weeks, by which time gross tumors are evident. Thus Reiskin and Mendelsohn (1964) found marked changes in the tumours compared with the normal epithelium (see table 13.1) tS and tG2 were FLM [fraction of labeled mitoses] derived, and TC was calculated by a stage-duration method, and calculations were made for the intervening hyperplastic epithelium, assuming that tS was the same as that found in the normal epithelium."
