Swimming speed

Range 140 to 470 μm/sec
Organism Ciliate Paramecium tetraurelia
Reference Bonini NM, Nelson DL. Differential regulation of Paramecium ciliary motility by cAMP and cGMP. J Cell Biol. 1988 May106(5):1615-23. p.1616 fig.1PubMed ID2836435
Method (p.1616 left column bottom paragraph:) "The swimming velocity of reactivated cells was determined by analyzing digitized video data of swimming paths using the Expert Vision system of Motion Analysis Corp. (Santa Rosa, CA)." Range extracted visually from fig. 1
Comments Caption to fig.1: "cAMP regulation of swimming speed of permeabilized cells: potentiation by PDE inhibitor IBMX. Paramecia were permeabilized with Triton X-100 and reactivated to swim in the presence of 4 mM MgATP and various concentrations of cAMP, in the presence (o) or absence (•) of 1 mM IBMX, a phosphodiesterase inhibitor. Data are presented as mean ± SEM. For points with no error bars, the SEM fell within the point."
