Method To study the effect of growth rate and substrate limitation on the composition and structure of the yeast cell wall, the yeast was grown in the chemostat at different dilution rates (D, which under steady state conditions equals the specific growth rate, µ) and under conditions in which the concentration of either glucose or NH4+ limited growth.
Comments Calculations of the mean volumes of cells grown under various conditions of substrate limitation showed that these volumes were little affected by the nature of the limitation, although they were dependent on growth rate (Fig. 8).
