Number of catalytic sites in acetylcholinesterase

Value 2 Active sites/molecule
Organism Electric eel Electrophorus electricus
Reference Leuzinger W. The number of catalytic sites in acetylcholinesterase. Biochem J. 1971 Jun123(2):139-41. abstract and p.141 left column 2nd paragraphPubMed ID5127329
Method The enzyme activity was measured by titrating the acetic acid released with 0.01 M-NaOH with an automatic titrator at pH8. The enzyme concentrations were measured spectrophotometrically.
Comments The finding of two active sites for acetylcholinesterase per 260,000mol.wt. units (i.e. about 130000 per site) is consistent with the proposed a2ß2 dimer structure (Leuzinger et al. 1969).
