Comments During the first two hours after fertilization, Drosophila embryos undergo 13 zygotic division cycles (Bownes' stages 1-4) and are syncytial in that the nuclei divide in a common cytoplasm without cytokenesis, except that pole cells, precursors to germline, are segregated in cycle 10.
