Comments Observed changes of polarity parameters across the DOPC bilayer indicate the existence of three distinct regions: (1) the headgroup region formed by choline and phosphates (14.8-30Å from the center of membrane), where water concentration changes from 55.5 to 30 M (2) the “mid-polar” region (8.2 to 14.8 Å) with octanollike properties (e ˜ 11) and intermediate water concentration (~1-3 M) that is formed by lipid carbonyls and ordered acyl chains including the double bonds and (3) the internal hydrocarbon core region (within ~8 Å from the membrane center) with cyclohexane-like properties (e ˜ 2.5) and low water concentration (<0.5 M) that is formed by disordered acyl chains. DOPC=dioleoylphosphatidylcholine
