Fraction of cell wall-derived peptides that are released to the medium out of total cell wall material per generation

Range 6 to 8 %
Organism Bacteria Escherichia coli
Reference Goodell EW, Schwarz U. Release of cell wall peptides into culture medium by exponentially growing Escherichia coli. J Bacteriol. 1985 Apr162(1):391-7. abstractPubMed ID2858468
Method Loss of murein fragments is easily detected by labeling the murein with an appropriate radioactive amino acid or amino sugar and then measuring the loss of label from the murein after transferring the cells to a medium without label.
Comments From the rate of release of three muropeptides, it was calculated that 6 to 8% of the murein in the sacculus was lost per generation.
