Comments The turnover of Na+,K+ATPase is responsible for approximately 30% of total oxygen consumption and 70% of renal oxygen consumption. Note-Alberts, Molecular biology of the cell, 3rd edition, 1994, chapter 11, p.514 top paragraph: "almost one third of the energy required of a typical animal cell is consumed in fueling this pump. in electrically active nerve cells... this figure approaches two thirds of the cell's energy requirements."
