Method Ionic concentrations in human and rabbit red blood cells were obtained from published data. The contribution of each of the ions to ionic strength was calculated from CiZi^2/2, where ci is the concentration (M) of each ion and zi is its charge. The same procedure was followed when complex formation between the ions was taken into account.
