Activities of GDPH (Glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase) in liver of Smelt and Capelin

Range Smelt 190.6±19.3: Capelin 45.1±2.3 Table - link µmol/g/min
Organism Fish
Reference Treberg JR, Lewis JM, Driedzic WR. Comparison of liver enzymes in osmerid fishes: key differences between a glycerol accumulating species, rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax), and a species that does not accumulate glycerol, capelin (Mallotus villosus). Comp Biochem Physiol A Mol Integr Physiol. 2002 Jun132(2):433-8. p.435 table 1PubMed ID12020659
Method All enzyme activities were determined spectrophotometrically with crude homogenate at 20°C on a Beckman DU640 spectrophotometer. Assays were based on the oxidation or reduction of pyridine nucleotides at 340 nm.
Comments The current study was undertaken to establish if certain enzymes in metabolic pathways that may be involved with glycerol production are indeed elevated (in Smelt) when compared with a more closely related confamiliar species that does not accumulate glycerol (Capelin).
