Fraction of cytoplasm occupied by macromolecules (excluded volume fraction)

Range 34-44 Table - link %
Organism Bacteria Escherichia coli

Method Using equation 10 p. 601: F=v×C(cytoplasm) where F is the volume fraction effectively occupied by cytoplasmic (protein+RNA), v the effective specific volume for excluded volume interactions, and C(cytoplasm) conc. of RNA+protein in cytoplasm, and using C(cytoplasm)=0.34 g/ml and v=1.0 or 1.3 ml/g.
Comments In both stationary and exponential phase. This is about half the maximum packing density of spheres in three dimension (Vazquez 2010 PMID 20171231). Note-range of 20-40% given by Ando et al., 2010 PMID 20937902 1st paragraph. Range of 10-15% given by Lukacs et al., 2000 PMID 10636854 p.1629 left column 3rd paragraph citing Kao et al., 1993 PMID 8416987 (however range wasn't located in Kao).
