Comments Under conditions of carbon source starvation, E. coli cells accumulate Pi to levels of approximately 20-30 mM (primary source). Under typical growth conditions, there are numerous controls (the Pho regulon) that maintain the cytoplasmic Pi at a high concentration (approximately 10 mM BNID 105540). Note-Primary source gives internal Pi of 20 to 30mM in normal cells, rather than cells under carbon starvation.
