Range 2.8-3.2 ATP/glucose
Organism Bacteria Escherichia coli

Method "The growth yields of Escherichia coli on glucose, lactose, galactose, maltose, maltotriose, and maltohexaose were estimated under anaerobic conditions in the absence of electron acceptors... Measurements of ß-galactosidase activity: The method of Miller (17) was used except that MMA was substituted for Z buffer. Activities are quoted in units of micromoles of o-nitrophenol produced per minute per milligram (dry weight) of cells. Qualitative analysis of fermentation products: Fermentation products in culture supernatants were analyzed by the method described in The Anaerobe Laboratory Manual (12) with a Perkin-Elmer Fil gas chromatograph with output from a flame ionization detector."
