Prochlorococcus and synechococcus cell concentrations in sea water of different depths

Range Table - link
Organism Cyanobacteria
Reference West NJ, Schönhuber WA, Fuller NJ, Amann RI, Rippka R, Post AF, Scanlan DJ. Closely related Prochlorococcus genotypes show remarkably different depth distributions in two oceanic regions as revealed by in situ hybridization using 16S rRNA-targeted oligonucleotides. Microbiology. 2001 Jul147(Pt 7):1731-44PubMed ID11429451
Method The mean fraction of Prochlorococcus, or Prochlorococcus plus Synechococcus, as a percentage of total bacteria as assessed by in situ hybridization was then compared to that estimated by flow cytometry
Comments The two independent methods gave similar results although the estimates by in situ hybridization were often slightly lower than those obtained by flow cytometry, except for the 100 m sample, where the converse was observed.
