Method	For the enumeration of AAP bacteria, seawater samples were fixed with 2% paraformaldehyde (final concentration). Samples were stored in the dark for 18 h at 4°C and then filtered onto 0.2-µm-pore-size black polycarbonate filters. Filters were stored at –80°C before microscopic counts. AAP bacterial abundances were determined following the protocol previously described by Cottrell et al. (8).
Comments	Prochlorococcus is probably the most abundant photosynthetic organism on Earth. Measured in gyre of south pacific ocean, most oligotrophic (nutrient poor) water in world.
