Cell Surface area

Value 6 µm^2
Organism Bacteria Salmonella typhimurium
Reference Smit J, Kamio Y, Nikaido H. Outer membrane of Salmonella typhimurium: chemical analysis and freeze-fracture studies with lipopolysaccharide mutants. J Bacteriol. 1975 Nov124(2):942-58 Table 3PubMed ID1102538
Method Calculated from table 3: Measured diameter (d) 0.75 µm. length (l) measured on electron microscopic prints to be 2.47µm. Cells were assumed to be cylinders with hemispherical ends. Thus, the volume of a cell equals (pi/6)d^3 + (pi/4)d^2(I - d), where d and I are diameter and length of the cell, respectively. The surface area of this cell is then pd^2 + pd(l - d) =pdl=p×0.75×2.46=5.82µm^2
