Method Growth was performed in supplemented M9 medium with glycerol and electron transfer acceptors as described in ref. Membrane potential was calculated from the accumulation of the [14C]Ph4P+ cation in EDTA-treated cells. For the calculation of Membrane potential, the cytoplasmic concentrations of Ph4P+ ([Ph4 P+in]) were taken (Membrane potential= 59 mV · lg [Ph4P+ in]/[Ph4P+ ex]).
