Method Growth was performed in supplemented M9 medium with glycerol and electron transfer acceptors as described in ref. The minimal proton stoichiometry was calculated from Delta G(Gibbs free energy)phos << m · F · deltap(proton electric potential) with Delta Gphos and Delta p of the respective growth conditions.
Comments Low value (3.1 H+/ATP) for growth on (Glycerol + O2) substrate. High value (3.6 H+/ATP) for growth on (Glycerol + Me2SO).
