Method YATP(max) was determined by measuring the rate of oxygen consumption(QO2) and growth rate(D), and calculating the value of mol ATP formed per mol oxygen (N) and the energetic maintenance cost (M). The equation QO2 = D/YATP(max)*N + M/N was used.
Comments "Cells were grown at the stated pH (±0.05) under carbon-limited conditions. ?H+/O ratios, MO2, and YO2(max) determined as described in Table 1 and in the Materials and Methods section. Values of N were calculated by the same approach as described in the text for glycerol, with the modifications described in the footnotes to this Table. The theoretical value of YATP(max) for each carbon source was calculated essentially as described by Stouthamer [ref 31], but no allowances were made for the transport of any cell nutrients. Where appropriate, all values are quoted as the average S.E.M. with the number of determinations in brackets" YATP(max) is the number of grams of cells (dry weight) produced per mole of ATP corrected for cellular maintenance energy costs.
