Method The value is beta. The equation P(x)/P(0) = (1 - x)^(beta) was used to relate relative photosynthetic rate (P(x)/P(0)) to proportional disease severity (x), where beta represents the ratio between virtual and visual lesion.
Comments anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum. The high values of beta obtained for anthracnose indicated that the photosynthesis in the green area beyond the necrotic symptoms of anthracnose was severely impaired. Relative photosynthetic rate is the ratio of the photosynthetic rate of a diseased leaf to the average photosynthetic rate of the healthy control leaves. The virtual lesion is the proportion of leaf tissue equal to or larger than the visual lesion (proportion of leaf tissue with visible symptoms), in which photosynthesis is impaired and assumed to be zero.
