Method Abstract: "To assess their origin and relationship to mature, heat-stable Ag HSA[lo] B cells, [investigators] determined HSA and surface IgD [Immunoglobulin D] phenotype among splenic B cells throughout development, as well as during reconstitution of lethally irradiated adults given adult B-depleted bone marrow."
Comments P.4433 right column 5th paragraph: "The numbers of splenic B cells bearing each phenotype throughout development are shown in Figure 2. HSA[hi] B cells peaked at 3 wk of age, then decreased slightly, reaching a relatively constant level of 5 to 10×10^6 cells per spleen by 6 wk of age and thereafter (25 wk). In contrast, HSA[lo] B cells began to increase at 3 to 4 wk and plateaued with adulthood. A reciprocal pattern was observed for numbers of sIgD+ [surface Immunoglobulin D] cells, suggesting that emergence of the HSA[lo] population reflects maturation of cells in the spleen. Together, these data show that the magnitude of the HSA[hi] pool quickly achieves steady state, and that its proportional decline reflects a continually enlarging HSA[lo] population during the first 6 wk of life."
