p.1171 left column top paragraph:"Capacity of the vacuolar zinc store to sustain cell growth. The results shown in Fig. 1 and Table 1 indicate that yeast cells grown in high zinc can accumulate a large amount of vacuolar zinc. Based on these data, [investigators] estimated that cells grown in SD [synthetic defined] medium plus 1,000 µM ZnCl2 accumulate as much as 900 pmol vacuolar zinc/10^6 cells. This value corresponds to ~7×10^8 atoms of vacuolar zinc per cell. [Their] previous studies indicated that the threshold amount of total intracellular zinc required for cell growth is ~5×10^6 atoms of zinc per cell (ref 34)." |
