Comments P.172 right column: "The importance of hydration (and salts) will be appreciated when one learns that the unhydrated density of E. coli DNA is about 2, whereas its buoyant density in concentrated CsCl is 1.709 and in concentrated Cs2SO4 is 1.423 (refs 4,5). In fact, it has been estimated that at water activity of 1 (very dilute salt solutions), there are about 50 moles of water bound per mole nucleotide and at water activity of 0.78 (7.7M CsCl) there are about 8 moles of water hound per mole nucleotide of phage T4 DNA."
