Comparison of liver enzymes in osmerid fishes: key differences between a glycerol accumulating species, rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax), and a species that does not accumulate glycerol, capelin (Mallotus villosus). Method |
All enzyme activities were determined
spectrophotometrically with crude homogenate
at 20°C on a Beckman DU640
spectrophotometer. Assays were based on the oxidation
or reduction of pyridine nucleotides at 340
nm. |
Comments |
The current study was undertaken to establish if
certain enzymes in metabolic pathways that may
be involved with glycerol production are indeed
elevated (in Smelt) when compared with a more closely
related confamiliar species that does not accumulate
glycerol (Capelin). |
