Method Cells were grown in low-phosphate minimal medium (21) containing 10µg of thiamine per ml, 20 µg of L-histidine per ml, and 0.2% glucose. The growth medium with no added molybdenum contained less than 10 nM molybdenum contamination and is referred to as low-molybdenum medium. Mo was measured by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. Molarity of molybdenum in whole cells was calculated by estimating cell volume as 1.6e-15 liter (ref 18) and dry weight of one cell as 2.8e-13 g (ref 15 BNID 103904).
