Method HeLa cells were grown as monolayers on polystyrene microcarrier beads (Nalge Nunc, Rochester,NY, USA) of 160–300mmdiameter. Cells were cultured in a 95% O2/5% CO2 atmosphere (378C) for 3 days to reach confluence in Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium. Light-microscopic images of cells on beads were acquired with a Nikon Diaphot 300 microscope.
Comments Light microscope measurements. Researchers measured 24 cells and got a radius of 10.5+/- 2.2 microns (mean +/- SD). The cells are a half sphere in culture, so the radius can be used to calculate a volume (BNID 103725). Value above from personal communication with author.
