Comments The general insights on the complexity of the output of the genome are derived from high-throughput studies. A part of these studies, which is based on full-length cDNA libraries and technologies for sequencing short tags derived from mRNAs [2nd ref in reference article], has demonstrated that in the mouse at least 63% of the genome is transcribed [primary ref reports that at least 63% of the mouse genome is transcribed and that there is a huge variability of transcription starting and termination sites. Conservatively there are at least 181 000 different RNAs produced from the mammalian genome.]
