Method Calculated from equation [1]: µ°W-µ°HC=RTln[X(HC)/X(W)] where X(HC) and X(W) are the equilibrium concentrations in mole fraction units in hydrocarbon and water, respectively, and µ°HC and µ°W are the corresponding standard chemical potentials. This equation developed into eq. 3 and graph plotted with chemical potential difference (left side of eq.[1]) as ordinate and cavity surface area as abscissa (fig. 2). The slope is 20-25 cal/mol/Å^2.
